چکیده

WHEN DISCUSSING A BRAIN FUNCTION SUCH AS MEMORY, one should relate it to brain plasticity. One definition of plasticity is an alternative way of performing the same function. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the human brain can perform amazing memory feats in unexpected, alternative ways. For example, the established ability of savants (individuals with partial brain damage) to memorize events, sequences of numbers, letters, or musical notes, and to perform arithmetical calculations, suggests that compensatory rewiring of brain circuits after injury can affect learning. Which particular form of brain plasticity could be responsible for such astounding learning abilities as those seen in Kim Peek (“Rain Man”) and Daniel Tammet (“Brainman”), two individuals diagnosed as autistic savants (www.savantsyndrome.com)? In this chapter, we describe a radical form of plasticity, adult neurogenesis, in hippocampal formation (HF). The discovery of adult neurogenesis (production of new neurons in adult brain) has radically changed our ideas of how the brain can adapt to physiological and environmental challenges. The process of neuronal production is highly regulated and is involved in hippocampal functions under physiological conditions. In some cases, neurogenesis can

Alterations in adult hippocampal neurogenesis, aberrant protein s-nitrosylation, and associated spatial memory loss in streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus type 2 mice

Objective(s): Epidemiological and biochemical studies conducted over the past two decades have established a strong link between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, the exact mechanisms through which aberrations in insulin signaling associated with T2DM contribute to cognitive decline are not yet known. Materials and Methods: In an effort to explore possible m...

O18: Role of Adult Hippocampal Neurogenesis in Anxiety Disorders

Neurogenesis occurs throughout life in several regions of the brain. In this lecture, a new sight for the role of the dentate gyrus and adult hippocampal neurogenesis in anxiety disorders will be discussed. The region that has obtained the most attention for its involvement in the neurogenesis of affective and anxiety disorders are the hippocampal and dentate gyrus. Evidence strongly suggests t...

Adult Hippocampal Neurogenesis and Memory

Adult neurogenesis, a concept emergent in the late 1990s, is the generation of new neurons in the adult brain. This process occurs thank to cells who have this proliferative feature, named as Neural Stem Cells (NSCs). Neural Stem Cells (NSCs) are primary progenitors who can generate the two neural types (neurons and glia). Classically it was assumed that NSCs are only present in the embryo, but...

Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Addiction Related Hippocampal Damages

The brain is an important organ that controls all sensory and motor actions, memory, and emotions. Each anatomical and physiological modulation in various brain centers, results in psychological, behavioral, and sensory-motor changes. Alcohol and addictive drugs such as opioids and amphetamines have been shown to exert a great impact on brain, specifically on the hippocampus. Emerging evidence ...

P 67: The Role of Neuroinflammation in Dysfunction of Adult Hippocampal Neurogenesis

Neuroinflammation as a protective mechanism for repairing tissue damage in the central nervous system (CNS), has been classified into two types: acute and chronic. It is characterized by the activation of microglia and astrocytes and the increase levels of different chemokines and cytokines. Neuroinflammation can be harmful, and it is a common pathological feature in neurodegenerative and psych...
